long-ass kitchen-sink bio:
Jackie Sheeler is a native New Yorker, an award-winning poet, songwriter, performer, and renegade. Her first collection, The Memory Factory, won the Magellan Prize (Buttonwood Press, 2002). When her second book, Off the Cuffs, Poems by and about the Police, was released by Soft Skull (2003), Thomas Lux said “This anthology should be in every police station in the US!” Three Rooms Press published her chapbook, to[o] long, in 2008 and a second full-length collection, Earthquake Came to Harlem, was published by NYQ Books in 2010. Other publication credits include anthologies and journals such as Bum Rush the Page, The Bandana Republic, New York Quarterly, Rattapallax and Long Shot.
She is the founder of Poetz, home to several long-standing poetry event calendars, and a weekly reading series started in 1999 that still draws a lively audience to the Cornelia Street Café on Friday nights.
As vocalist for Talk Engine, a popular WordRock band, Jackie toured the east coast and produced a full-length CD. She’s performed on radio and TV, at Symphony Space, Nuyorican Poets Cafe, Knitting Factory, Bowery Poetry Club, CBGB’s, Tonic and countless other venues nationwide. She’s presently working on a one-woman show directed by Kat Georges as well as a second wordrock album. You can listen to some of the tracks at the WordRock Project page at Reverbnation.
Jackie spends more time on Facebook than she should, and always welcomes new friends. Stop by and say hello sometime!
short & sweet:
Jackie Sheeler is an award-winning poet and songwriter with two CDs and three books under her belt so far. Her most recent collection, “Earthquake Came to Harlem,” published by NY Quarterly Books in 2010, was a finalist for the Patterson Poetry Prize. An occasional blogger and card-carrying activist, Jackie enjoys committing random acts of kindness and random acts of righteous indignation in equal measure. She’s presently working on an album of original songs & wordrock.
heavy on the publication credits:
Jackie’s publications include four books (Earthquake Came to Harlem, NYQ Books, 2010; to[o] long, Three Rooms Press, 2007; Off the Cuffs, Soft Skull Press, 2003; The Memory Factory, Buttonwood Press, 2002) a CD (Talk Engine, Engineous Productions, 2005) and numerous appearances in literary journals and anthologies. She has performed widely, and founded a literary website (www.poetz.com) as well as a weekly reading series in Manhattan. Visit her online at www.jackiesheeler.com.
WordRocker!
Jackie has had the privilege of performing and recording with many talented musicians, from David Amram to Mike Watts. Beginning as a solo spoken word artist with a loop station, she briefly joined The Minasian Collective — which garnered a standing ovation at Symphony Space for its innovative performance at their Joni Mitchell tribute show in 2002 — then founded the wordrock band Talk Engine, which she fronted for three years. Their self-titled CD received extensive college and internet airplay, and the band rocked out to packed houses regularly in NYC indie clubs such as CBGBs, Tonic, and the Tribeca Rock Club. Jackie now collaborates with many artists in her Wordrock Project; one song recorded with the guitarist known as Electric Birth (“Taps”) was a finalist in the 2009 John Lennon songwriting contest; her lyrics for “Merry Go Round” won third place in the 2004 Great American Song Contest. Presently working with Frankie Monroe, Marc Norgaard and other musicians, she is shooting for a fall 2011 release for her next album, Environmental Grunge.
What’s the sound? According to Bob Holman, if Patti Smith & Lou Reed had spawned a child, she would have grown up to be Jackie Sheeler. Laurie Anderson, PJ Harvey and Curt Cobain have all greatly influenced the sound & direction of her music.
random facts:
Jackie held for a time the unusual title Poet Laureate of Riker’s Island for doing volunteer workshops with the young men incarcerated there.
She’s publisher & webmistress of poetz.com, home of the NYC poetry calendar, and founded a reading series in 1999 that still rdraws a lively audience to the Cornelia Street Café on Friday nights.
When moved by the spirits of righteous indignation, Jackie blogs at getangryWITHme!, or sometimes simply posts a vblog to her youtube channel.
Yes, her birthday is really on 9/11.
